Anger

Today was the first day of Trump’s tariff war against Canada. Something I suspect will one day be described as the opening move of a concerted attack on our sovereignty.

This has become my primary focus for the day, I’ve been expediting the cancellation of most of my online services and accounts that are either based in the United States or directly profit Americans. It’s harder work that it should be given the reach of the big American tech and media companies, but I’m not complaining. If the circumstances weren’t so dark, it’s kind of liberating to get rid of so much junk and digital cruft.

Ahem.

However, the brighter side of this endeavour is overshadowed by the darker implications of events over the past several days. Listening to the speech delivered this evening, I was struck not by the policies proposed, but by the profound anger that seemed to emanate from President Trump. His words were not those of a victorious leader but of a man consumed by resentment and bitterness. It is a troubling sight to behold, history has shown us that fear and anger are not the tools of democracy and freedom but of division and strife.

I must confess, I never imagined that the American people would elect a figure so openly hostile to the principles of decency and decorum. I had always believed that our neighbours to the south held dear the values of liberty and justice, even as they fail to meet those ideals. But it seems we now find ourselves in a world where truth is subjective and civility is a relic of the past. Or even something to be loathed.

As we navigate these uncertain times, it is crucial that we remain steadfast in our resolve and clear-eyed in our assessment of the challenges before us. We must not let fear or anger cloud our judgment, Canada is a nation built on the principles of peace, order, and good government. Let us remember that our strength lies not in our might, though our southern neighbors ever underestimate our steadfast resolve, but in our unity and our unwavering commitment to the values that define us as Canadians.

In closing, I urge you all to remain vigilant and to stand together as we face this new and unprecedented challenge. Let us not be swayed by the rhetoric of division, but instead, let us strive to be a beacon of hope and stability in a world that seems increasingly uncertain.
